December 21 – Night of Closest Approach

This is how the planets appeared on December 21, 2020 at their closest approach:

This image is over-exposed yet you can see Jupiter’s moons and the planets’ relative positions.

This is a view from another remote telescope where the planets are not over-exposed, yet the moons are not visible:

Both planets have not been in alignment like this at night since the year 1226. The alignment happened after that year in 1623, but that was during the daytime.
