This is a widefield view of the North America nebula and the surrounding region.

This is a narrowband image taken over several hours and presented here in the Hubble Palette (SHO).

There are actually several nebulae in this image: the North America nebula, or NGC 7000 on the left, a dark nebula in the area that looks like the Gulf of Mexico called LDN 935; the Pelican Nebula, or NGC 5070, to the right, and IC 5068 below the Pelican Nebula, near the bottom right of the image.

These nebulae are huge – this image spans about 200 light years in both directions. The North America nebula is estimated to be about 1,800 light-years from us.  Many of the stars you see in this image are actually foreground stars.
