Two new active regions emerged from the Sun’s northeastern limb over the weekend and they are active:

The two regions are AR 2993 and 2994 and they have been generating solar flares since they were on the other side of the Sun. Over the weekend, the regions were the source of an X-1 solar flare that created a non-Earth-directed CME.

This is the northeastern limb on April 19, 2022 with a new, unnumbered, active region rotating into view on the left side of the image:

AR 2993 and AR 2994 produced C and M class solar flares before the preceding image was taken.

AR 2993 and 2994 continued to produce C and M class flares and they were joined by a new active region: 2995, as seen in the following image taken on April 20:

AR 2995 is on the left side of the image; AR 2993 is the upper sunspot to the right of center, and AR 2994 is the two sunspots below AR 2993.

This is the Sun on April 21:

AR 2993, near the right side of the image, was the source of an M-class solar flare during the past 24 hours. AR 2995, the dark spot near the left side of the image, was joined by another new sunspot that’s barely visible in this image – AR 2996 at the far upper-left of the Sun in this image.

This is the Sun on April 22:

AR 2993, at the right of the image, produced M and C class solar flares during the past 24 hours. AR 2994 is below 2993 with two sunspots; AR 2995 is the spot to the left of center and AR 2996 is near the upper-left of the image.

This is the Sun on April 26:

AR 2293 is the spot above the pair on the right side of the image, AR 2944 is the pair of spots near the right side of the image. AR 2295 is the dark spot near the left side of the image. The regions produced two M-class solar flares on April 25 but the flare did not produce a CME. The sunspots appear to be decaying as they approach the western limb.

AR 2994 produced an X-class solar flare on April 30, 2022, just after it rotated to the far side of the sun; this is the biggest solar flare in years.
