Slooh is more than a telescope as a service offering. Slooh is a vibrant community of astronomers all sharing their knowledge and experience. In addition to the community, Slooh is also a great way to learn about astronomy while learning to use the platform – Slooh does this through Quests.

A Slooh Quest is a lesson about a particular topic where you participate by taking relevant pictures of the night sky to complete a poster (to commemorate your completion of the quest), and by answering questions about what you have learned.

For example, here’s a little bit of the poster for the Messier Challenge Quest:

In this poster are the images I took of the objects in the Messier catalog. The poster is suitable for printing so you can put it up on your wall as a reminder of the cool things you viewed using Slooh.

In addition to a great poster made up of your own images, you also gain Gravity Points – Slooh’s currency of experience and measure of your overall contribution to the community.

Types of Quests

Quests are subdivided into several categories like Difficulty (100-400), Grade Level (Elementary, Middle, High School, and College), and Seasonality.

You can choose from a broad range of Quests with titles like Lunar Phases, Messier Challenge, Charting The Cosmos, Drake’s Equation, In The Footsteps of Kepler, Life of Stars, and many more. Slooh adds new Quests frequently.

While a lot of Quests are created by Slooh staff, a number of them are either created by community members or inspired by them, so there’s always something interesting to do and learn through Quests.

Quests help you earn Gravity Points ranging between 100 and 500 Gravity Points per Quest. Gravity Points determine your level in the community and there are leaderboards to help you figure out your level and how many Gravity Points you need to get to the next level.

What You’ll Learn Through Quests

You’ll learn a lot about astronomy and learn how to use the Slooh platform to take great pictures. You’ll learn about interesting topics like the life of stars, galaxy classification, understanding celestial coordinates, when objects are visible in the sky, and much more – all in an engaging lesson-based format that makes learning interesting.

Student members use Quests to show that they have completed certain learning objectives as set out by their school.

Quest Availability

All Quests are available to all members and it’s easy to access them: just select a Quest from your Dashboard and you can start on it whenever you like.
